Women Self Defense Course Coming in June

The Windsor Heights police department is looking for women interested in a women self defense course. More on this from the Des Moines Register:

The Windsor Heights Police Department is looking for women interested in participating in a women’s education and self-defense course in June, according to a news release.

Officials plan to hold the Rape Aggression Defense course from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday evenings in June at the Windsor Heights Community and Event Center. The dates are tentatively set for June 16, 17, 23 and 24.

The Rape Aggression Defense program is the largest nationally recognized women’s self-defense program, the release stated. Classes mix education and awareness topics with hands-on self-defense techniques.

Women who are high school age and older can register for the course at the Windsor Heights City Hall, 1133 66th Street.

New students must pay a one-time registration fee of $25 and complete all pre-event paperwork and waivers before the program’s first class. Returning students can take the course without paying again.

Only 20 students can enroll in the course. Officials recommend participants attend all classes to successfully complete the program.

The course encourages a moderate level of activity, but officials advise women of all ages and abilities to attend.

“The objective of the basic RAD program is to develop and enhance the options of self defense so that they may become viable options for a woman who is attacked,” Windsor Heights Police Chief McDaniel said in the news release. “We work with our students to educate them on general awareness issues and also strive to create confidence in the application of some basic self defense techniques.”

Anyone with questions can direct them to Officer Woods at the Windsor Heights Police Department. She can be reached at 515-645-6829 orawoods@windsorheights.org.
