MORAINE, Ohio (WDTN) – No!
It’s a short response that comes with quite a punch in Moraine.
“This was actually my dad’s Christmas gift to my mom, my sister, and I,” said Jessica Schulte, taking a RAD class at the Moraine Civic Center.
For Schulte and her family, it is the gift of self-defense.
RAD or Rape Aggression Defense was taught at the Moraine Civic Center. Wednesday night was the final night of a four-week training to help women learn defensive techniques.
The training can help put a father’s mind at ease.
“I think he decided that we need to have a way to get out if we do have one of those moments where this doesn’t feel right,” said Schulte. “What do I do now?”
For the instructors, the class is meant to be more than defending against a potential attacker.
“Ninety percent of self-defense is being aware and avoiding the actual conflict istelf,” said Sgt. Mike Keegan with the Moraine Police Department. “It’s trusting your instincts and noticing that you’re going into a dangerous situation and try to think of other ways to deal with that other than to get into a violent situation.”
In case a situation gets out of hand, Keegan is one of two instructors giving women their best opportunity to protect themselves.
“I’ll get suited up in a red suit and they’ll actually get to apply a lot,” said Keegan. “They’ve been hitting on square pads to a round body where they are actually being aggressed against. That’s where you see sort of the light come on.”
It is meant to give women the courage to know no matter how daunting the challenge may be, they have the means to escape safely.
“It’s given me a lot of confidence that I have ways to get out of this,” said Schulte. “Make it out alive. That’s our thing here is to get home at night, get to the people you love, and make it out alive.”
The city tries to host the class once or twice a year. The cost is free for participants.
